How to choose the right art for your home

Decorating with art is one of the easiest – and most effective – ways to add personality and flair to a room. But with so many options, it can be hard to know where to start. Should you go for original art, posters or canvas prints? And how do you know what will work best in your home?

Here are my best tips for choosing the right art – whether you live big or small, modern or classic.

1. Start with your personal style (not trends)

Start by thinking about what you like – rather than what is popular right now. Art is personal, and it should feel right to you every time you see it.

Consider questions such as:

  • What colors am I drawn to?
  • Do I like abstract, figurative, nature motifs or photography?
  • Do I want the art to stand out or blend in?

Tip! If you're unsure, start with posters or canvas prints – it's an affordable way to try out different styles.

2. Adapt the art to the room

Think about where the art will hang . Different rooms have different needs.

  • Living room: Here you can focus on larger works or create a picture wall. The art should preferably be a "statement piece".
  • Bedroom: Soft colors and calm motifs often work best. Canvas prints in muted tones are a popular choice.
  • Kitchen & Hallway: Smaller posters or illustrations work well here. Think creatively – art can hang anywhere!

Tip: Use invisible hanging hooks for a minimalist look.

3. The right size is crucial

A common mistake is choosing art that is too small for the wall. As a rule of thumb:

  • Over a sofa or bed: the piece should be about 2/3 of the width of the furniture
  • In small spaces: group several smaller posters instead of a single small motif

You can also combine several sizes in one picture wall – feel free to use a picture wall kit with a template to get the correct placement.

4. Match with the right frame and lighting

The frame is half the experience. A stylish frame can enhance the feeling of exclusivity, even for a simple poster.

  • Wooden frame for heating
  • Black frame for contrast
  • Thin metal for a modern look

Don't forget the lighting either! Discreet painting lighting can add drama and lift the entire piece.

5. Let art create emotion

Think about how you want to feel in the room. Art affects our mood more than we think.

  • Blue tones create calm
  • Red and orange give energy
  • Nature motifs can reduce stress
  • Abstract art provokes thought and discussion

Choosing art is not just about color and shape – it's about mood and identity.

Summary – how to choose the right art:

✔ Start from what you like
✔ Customize the art to suit the room
✔ Choose the right size for the wall
✔ Complete with frame and lighting
✔ Create the right feeling with color and motif
